Over 200 Republicans Break Ranks, Endorse Kamala Harris Over Trump
Washington, USA: Donald Trump has encountered a significant challenge from within his own Republican party. Over 200 Republicans, many of whom previously served under former US President George W. Bush, have openly endorsed Kamala Harris for the presidency, rejecting Trump as their party’s candidate.
This endorsement comes just weeks before the US Presidential election, set to take place in early November.
According to a report by Fox News, a coalition of Republican officials, including several former aides to George H.W. Bush, has thrown their support behind Kamala Harris, the current Vice President and a Democrat. They have urged “moderate Republicans and conservative independents” to consider voting for her.
This isn’t the first instance of such opposition within the party. In the 2020 US Presidential election, the same group also opposed Trump’s candidacy.
“Four years ago, alumni of President George W. Bush, the late Senator John McCain, and then-Governor Mitt Romney came together to warn fellow Republicans that re-electing President Trump would be disastrous for our nation. We predicted that another four years under Trump would irreparably harm our cherished democracy,” the letter stated, as published on Monday by USA Today.
The group has now reconvened, joined by new alumni from George H.W. Bush’s administration, to reaffirm their stance from 2020 and, for the first time, collectively declare their support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz in the upcoming election.
While acknowledging their significant policy disagreements with Harris, the Republican officials stressed that the alternative is unacceptable. “Of course, we have many honest, ideological differences with Vice President Harris and Governor Walz, as one would expect.”
